And it's begun...

This blog hasn't been touched in nearly two years. It's time to brush off the cobwebs, get rid of the old posts, and begin again. And what perfect timing because we have just begun on our kitchen remodeling journey! In order to document our progress, our screw-ups, our long nights, and weeks upon weeks of not having a working kitchen, we will be blogging away for your enjoyment and entertainment.

We have hemmed and hawed about this for years. Too much time, effort and money have dissuaded us every year. But this year we said enough is enough! I'm done with grad school, Derk is finishing up his PhD this summer, and we have run out of excuses. Ikea kitchens have always caught our eye. They get good reviews, are cheaper than the alternatives, and they have cool little gadgets like door dampers so they don't slam shut. With the help of their online planning tools, we planned out our new kitchen and this week we purchased the cabinets and countertops. Woot woot!

We have some major upgrades that we're pretty stoked about. First, the soffit is coming down. This will allow for much taller cabinets. (And the need for a stool.) We will have recessed lighting and speakers in the ceiling. The kitchen cart will be gone and in its place will be cabinets. We're also getting rid of the bar top and stools; that will now be a long window bench. The flooring will be torn out and replaced with bamboo. We also need to buy tiles for back splash and pendant lights for the two cut-outs. A new sink and dishwasher too. My head spins just thinking about this. But we're SO excited.

The timeline? 4-5 weeks. You might be laughing at this. (Because I am too.) But we have an attack plan and we're going to do our best to stick to the dates we outlined. The cabinets get delivered late June and we will start the prepping soon after that. After we get back from vacation, the work truly begins at the end of July/beginning of August. Here's to weeks of eating off of paper plates and our house being in total disarray.

So what will it all look like when it's finished? Here is a picture to give you an idea (with just the cabinets and countertop colors. Our kitchen definitely doesn't look like this.) We went with medium brown Akurum cabinets with a white quartz countertop. Floors will be a light blonde shade of wood. We're thinking about light gray walls with white subway tile backsplash.
